Melbourne Cup
I'm never backing another Irish or (kiwi for that matter) horse again. Bloody Septimus sprints to the line first and then realises "oh shit I have to go round the track again?"
Damn stupid 40/1 rank outsider wins the cup by a nose hair. burned a massive hole in my pocket

Re: Melbourne Cup
Yup I backed the 4 favourites. $5 each on Septimus, Mad Rush, Nom De Juer and Profound Beauty. I figure if the best odds were 6/1 on Mad rush then the least I could win on any of the horses was $30 and I'd get my money back.
That easy bet looks like the exacta (1st and 2nd in correct order). The trifecta paid $23k and the first 4 paid something like $880,000. It's like trying to winning lotto.
Viewed finished last in the Caufield Cup. So much for the bloody form guide

Re: Melbourne Cup
LOL Josh read it carefully - I didn't win. I said picking the first 4 in that race was like trying to win lotto.
yeah but a $1 bet returning 880k is pretty good. But if you made it a $10 bet its almost $9mill.
For the benefit of those who have absolutely no idea what we are on about, the Melbourne Cup is horse race run on the first Tuesday of November every year since 1860. Dubbed 'the race that stops a nation' (because literally it does), the cup is an opportunity for everyone to become an expert for a day on horse racing. From kindergartens to office boardrooms the country shuts down at 3pm to watch the race and it is considered un-Australian, bordering on treason, if you do not get involved and have a punt.
Mostly it's an excuse for us to drink vast amounts of grog in mid-afternoon but lately it's been used by politicians to announce very bad news (because no one will give a damn about it on that day). Indeed our Kevin Rudd announced a $40billion hole in the federal budget which no one seemed to notice...

Re: Melbourne Cup
you kiwis. In the middle of a financial crisis caused by investment bankers you guys vote one in as PM. We can't laugh though, we have one as our opposition leader. Sad times indeed. We need another horse race to cheer up the country.
